12V Fridges for Vans: The 2026 Buyer's Guide

VanTested has fifteen guides about moving heat out of a van and none about the appliance that does it all day, every day, whether or not you are on board. This fixes that.

The trigger was a reader question that is more useful than any spec sheet, because it is the question people actually have. He was offered a used Dometic CFX3 45 together with a portable battery pack for $450, said outright he was new to the category, and asked whether that was a good deal. So we will answer that first, then work backward into how to choose one from scratch.

Is a used CFX3 45 plus a battery for $450 a good deal?

Start with the anchors, because a price only means something against them.

The Dometic CFX3 45 has been the premium 45L benchmark in this category for years, and it sells new for roughly $900 to $1,000. It is still listed and still supported. The relevant piece of context is that Dometic has moved its premium line on to the CFX5 series, which uses vacuum insulation panels to get more interior space and better efficiency into a lighter box, and the CFX3 line is on its way out as a result.

That generational change is almost certainly why a used one is in front of you. It is also the reason a used CFX3 is a reasonable thing to buy rather than a warning sign: nothing is wrong with the outgoing model, there is simply a newer one, and the used market prices the newness rather than the fridge.

So on the fridge alone, roughly half of new for a working CFX3 45 is a fair to good price. Adding a battery pack that was designed to run it makes the bundle look better still, and this is where we have to be careful, for two reasons.

First, the battery is the risky half. A compressor that spins is a compressor that works, and you can verify that in ten minutes. A lithium pack that lights up and shows a charge percentage tells you very little, because capacity loss is invisible until you put it under load for hours. If you can, run the fridge from the pack for an afternoon before money changes hands, and judge the pack on how long it actually lasts rather than on what the display says at the start.

Second, VanTested does not currently recommend or link lithium battery brands, a standing position while we work through that category properly, so treat everything above as advice on buying used rather than an endorsement of any pack.

The inspection, in the order worth doing it:

  • Plug the fridge in and leave it running for at least an hour before you commit. A fridge that is merely cool is not the same as one that reaches setpoint.
  • Set it to a fridge temperature and watch for the compressor cycling off once it gets there. A unit that runs continuously and never satisfies is telling you about a refrigerant or seal problem.
  • Close the lid on a sheet of paper and pull. Even drag all the way round means the gasket is alive. A slack corner is a fixable annoyance, and it is also a bargaining point.
  • Look at the display for stored error codes and ask the seller to explain any of them.
  • Check the DC cable and plug, which is the part that gets stood on, and the latches, which are the part that gets broken.
  • Ask what it was used for. A fridge that lived in a truck cab is a different item from one that did six weekends a year.

Verdict on the specific question: if the fridge passes that inspection, $450 for a working premium 45L plus a battery is a good buy, and the reason to hesitate is the pack, not the fridge.

What you are actually paying for

Nearly every 12V fridge on the market is the same three things: a small DC compressor, an insulated box, and a controller. The compressor is usually a Secop unit, the Danish design formerly sold under the Danfoss name, or a Chinese equivalent built to the same pattern. That is why listings shout about Secop. It is a real signal, and it is also the part that varies least between a $500 fridge and a $950 one.

What the money actually buys, in descending order of how much it matters:

  1. Insulation. This is the whole game. Better insulation means a shorter duty cycle, which means fewer amp hours for the same food at the same temperature. The premium end has moved to vacuum panels for exactly this reason.
  2. The lid seal and the lid itself. The biggest single hole in any cooler is the lid, and a good gasket is worth more than a compressor upgrade.
  3. Build and hardware. Latches, hinges, handles, and whether the case survives being a step. This is what fails first on budget units, long before the cooling does.
  4. Controller and app. Convenient, occasionally useful for watching temperature overnight, and never a reason to choose one fridge over another.
  5. Warranty and support. Compressor warranties of three to five years are common across the market. Whether anyone answers the phone is the part you cannot read from the listing.

Notice what is not on the list: cooling ability. Everything here freezes. A $250 Alpicool and a $950 Dometic will both hold your food at 39F. The Dometic will do it using less power, in a box that survives more abuse, and it will still be doing it in ten years.

Power draw is a duty cycle, not a number

This is the single most misunderstood thing in the category and it is worth being precise about.

A 45L fridge with a “45W” rating is drawing about 45W, or roughly 4A at 12V, while the compressor is running. It does not run continuously. It runs until the box reaches setpoint, stops, warms up, and starts again. What you actually pay for is the average across the day, which means the fraction of the time the compressor is running.

Published figures and owner reports for a 40 to 50L unit cluster around 25 to 40Ah a day, or roughly 300 to 500 watt hours. Dometic’s own claim for the CFX3 45 works out at about 1.03Ah per hour, near 25Ah across a day, which sits at the good end of that band and is what better insulation buys you.

Five things move that number, roughly in order of size:

  • Ambient temperature. The fridge is fighting the difference between inside and outside. A van at 95F in the afternoon is a completely different load from a van at 65F, and the same fridge can easily use twice the power.
  • Setpoint. Every degree colder costs. Running the whole box as a freezer costs far more than running it as a fridge, which is the real argument for dual zone.
  • Sun on the box. A fridge in direct sun through a window is being heated on purpose. An insulated cover, which several models sell as an accessory, is a genuine and cheap lever here.
  • Door openings. Cold air falls out of a front-opening fridge and mostly stays in a top-opening one, which is why almost every 12V fridge is a chest design. Every opening still costs.
  • How full it is. A full fridge has more thermal mass and rides through openings better. Water bottles are free ballast.

Where a measurement would settle it. Nobody in this category publishes duty cycle against ambient temperature, which is the number that would let you size a battery bank honestly instead of guessing at a range. That is a shunt, a logger and a week, and it is on our bench list. Until then, treat 40Ah a day as your planning figure for a 45L unit in summer and be pleasantly surprised. The 12V port ceiling, which is where power station builds break

If your van runs on a power station rather than a wired 12V system, the fridge is the load that finds the limit, and it does it in two different ways.

The first is arithmetic. Many power stations give you one 12V cigarette-lighter socket rated at about 10A, roughly 120W total. A fridge at 4 to 5A running plus a roof fan at up to 4A on high sits right at that ceiling with nothing to spare, before you have plugged in anything else.

The second is less obvious and catches more people. A compressor draws a surge at startup that is well above its running current, and a port that comfortably carries the running load can still trip on the spike. Because the fridge restarts every cycle, this shows up as a fridge that mysteriously stops overnight rather than as an obvious overload.

There is a third, quieter failure: some power stations power down their 12V output when they see very little draw, and a fridge that has just satisfied its thermostat looks exactly like nothing being plugged in. You wake up to a warm fridge and a fully charged power station.

None of that means a power station cannot run a fridge. It means the fridge should be the load you plan the DC side around. One setting worth knowing about before you get there: most of these fridges have a three-level battery protection setting, low, medium and high, which cuts the fridge off at a supply voltage of its own choosing to protect a starter battery. On a power station or a house battery that cutoff is usually unhelpful and sometimes actively confusing, because it turns your fridge off long before your battery is empty. Set it to low unless the fridge is genuinely wired to a starting battery. If your fridge has stopped and nothing is obviously wrong, this setting is the first thing to check, along with everything else in 12V triage when nothing works.

Sizing, and the constraint that actually decides it

Capacity is rarely what decides the purchase. The slot in your build is. Two measurements matter and only one of them is on the listing:

  • The footprint, which you can read off the specification. An ICECO VL45 is listed at 27.4 by 15.8 by 19.3 inches. A Dometic CFX3 45 at 27.3 by 15.7 by 18.7. An Alpicool CF45 at 27.2 by 13.6 by 18.2. They are all roughly the same box, which tells you something about how settled this category is.
  • The lid swing, which is on no listing anywhere. These are chest fridges. The lid opens upward and needs clearance above it, and a fridge that slides perfectly into a garage under a fixed bed is a fridge you cannot open. Measure the height to whatever is above the slot, add the lid’s travel, and check it before ordering rather than after.

Weight is worth a glance too, since it decides whether the fridge is a fixed installation or something you carry. A 30L Alpicool CF35 is listed at 28 lb. A 45L ICECO VL45 at 49.2 lb. A 55L ICECO APL55 at 54.7 lb. The step from 30 to 45L is where a fridge stops being something you move alone comfortably.

Where it goes, and the ventilation nobody mentions

A compressor fridge does not remove heat from the world, it moves heat out of the box and dumps it into the air next to the condenser. Build it into a tight cabinet and you have made a small oven that the fridge then has to work against.

The symptoms are gradual: a longer duty cycle, more amp hours than the guide said, and on a hot afternoon a thermal cutout that looks exactly like a failure. Owners chase electrical faults for weeks over this.

What to do about it:

  • Identify the vented side or sides on your specific model and leave real space there, not a token gap.
  • Give the air somewhere to go. A gap at the bottom for cool air in and a gap at the top for warm air out beats one large opening.
  • Do not store gear against the vents. This is the version of the mistake that happens after the build is finished.
  • Keep it out of direct sun where you can, and use an insulated cover where you cannot.
  • If it lives in a sealed garage space, a small 12V computer fan pulling air through costs a fraction of an amp and pays for itself in duty cycle.

The shortlist, on claimed specs

None of these have been independently verified by us. Dimensions and weights come from manufacturer and Amazon product data; everything else is a claim.

The budget tier, around $250, is the Alpicool CF45 and its many near-identical siblings. It will keep your food cold. The honest case for it is that it costs a third of the premium option and works, and the honest case against it is that insulation and hardware are where budget units economise, so you pay the difference back in amp hours and in what breaks first. If your van drives most days and charges hard, that trade is fine. If you sit still for a week, it is not.

The middle, around $500, is where we would spend. The ICECO VL45 puts a Secop compressor and decent hardware in a 45L box, and the version bundled with an insulated cover is worth taking, because the cover is a real efficiency item rather than an accessory. Its listed 49.2 lb makes it a fixed installation rather than a fridge you carry to a picnic.

The premium tier, around $900 to $1,000, is the Dometic CFX3 45. What you are buying is efficiency and durability, and at a listed 42 lb it is lighter than the mid-tier unit at the same capacity, which is insulation doing its job. Buy it if you live in the van full time, if your electrical system is tight, or if you camp somewhere genuinely hot. With the CFX5 series now above it in Dometic’s range, this is also the model to watch on the used market.

If you want frozen food, the ICECO APL55 gives you two independently controlled zones with a removable divider, so you can run it as one 55L box when you do not need the freezer. Check the numbers above before committing: at 29.7 inches long and 54.7 lb it is meaningfully bigger than a 45L unit in every direction, and the freezer side will cost you amp hours every day you use it.

If you are tight on space, the Alpicool CF35 at a listed 28 lb and 30.6L is the one that fits where a 45L will not, and it is the right answer for a solo build or a weekender before it is the wrong answer for two people living aboard.

What we would do next

If you are choosing a fridge before the rest of the electrical system exists, choose the fridge first and size the system to it. It is the only load that runs every hour of every day, it is the load that sets your overnight consumption, and it is far easier to add battery than to make a fridge use less.

Can I run a 12V fridge from a power station?

Usually yes, with one caveat that catches people out. Most power stations offer a single 12V cigarette-lighter port rated around 10A, roughly 120W, and a compressor fridge draws 4 to 5A while running. That fits, until you add a roof fan and land at the ceiling, or until the compressor's startup surge trips the port's protection even though the running draw was fine. Is a used 12V fridge a good buy?

Often yes, because the compressor is the expensive part and Secop-class compressors are long-lived, and because a generational model change floods the used market with working units. The inspection is simple and non-negotiable: plug it in before you pay, let it run for at least an hour, confirm it actually pulls down to setpoint rather than merely getting cold, listen for the compressor cycling on and off rather than running flat out forever, and check the lid seal by closing it on a sheet of paper and feeling the drag. Walk away from any unit whose display shows an error code the seller cannot explain. Where used gets risky is a bundled lithium battery pack, because a tired pack looks identical to a healthy one until it is under load.

What size 12V fridge do I need for van life?

For one person, 30 to 35L covers two or three days between shops and fits under a bench where a bigger unit will not. For two people, 45L is the default and the reason most of the market is built at that size, giving roughly four to five days. Above that you are usually buying freezer space rather than fridge space, which is what dual-zone units at 55L and up are for. The constraint that actually decides it is rarely capacity: it is the slot in your build, and specifically whether the lid can open fully once the fridge is in place.

Does a 12V fridge need ventilation?

Yes, and this is the most common install mistake in the category. A compressor fridge does not destroy heat, it moves it from inside the box to the air around the condenser, so a fridge sealed into a tight cabinet is being asked to dump heat into an enclosure that is getting hotter. The result is a longer duty cycle, more amp hours, and on a hot day a thermal shutdown that reads like a fault. Leave real gaps around the vented sides, ideally with a path for air to leave high and enter low, and never block the vents with stored gear.

Single zone or dual zone?

Single zone unless you specifically want frozen food. A dual-zone fridge splits one insulated box into two compartments with independent setpoints, which is genuinely useful if you cook from frozen or travel far between shops, and pointless if you were going to run it all at fridge temperature anyway. Dual-zone units are bigger, heavier and cost more, and the frozen side costs more amp hours than the fridge side. Several of them let you remove the divider and run as a single zone, which is the sensible hedge if you are unsure.
