Diesel Heaters for Vans: The 2026 Buyer's Guide

VanTested has been a cooling site. Fourteen guides on air conditioning, fridges and power, and nothing at all on the opposite season. This is the start of fixing that, and it starts with the category most van builds land on: the diesel air heater.

Before any of the buying advice, the one thing that matters most.

The exhaust is the entire safety story

A diesel air heater does not heat your van by burning diesel in it. Inside the unit are two completely separate air paths. One is the combustion circuit, which draws its own air from outside the vehicle, burns fuel in a sealed chamber, and pushes the exhaust back outside. The other is the cabin circuit, where a fan blows your interior air across the outside of that sealed chamber and back into the van, warmed. The two never meet.

That separation is why the technology is safe in principle and why every real accident in this category traces back to the same place: the exhaust. If the exhaust pipe leaks, terminates in the wrong place, or gets blocked, combustion products end up somewhere they were never meant to be.

The UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards recalled the Vevor WF 5001 diesel parking heater on 30 June 2023, across three carton numbers covering the 2kW and 5kW variants. The listed hazard was that inadequate instructions meant users might install the exhaust improperly, so that, in the notice’s words, “poisonous gases can escape the product and poison the user”, with a secondary fire risk from an ignition source sited near combustible material. The notice specifically identified the missing element as warnings advising the user to place the exhaust pipe away from combustible and poisonous materials.

Read that carefully, because it is easy to draw the wrong lesson. The recall was not about a defective burner. It was about a manual that did not tell inexperienced buyers how to route an exhaust. That is a 2023 notice and it is evergreen context rather than news, but it is the single most useful fact in this article, because the documentation gap it describes is still the standard complaint about budget units today.

What it means for you, whichever heater you buy:

  • The exhaust terminates outside the vehicle, below it, pointed away from the body and away from anything that can burn.
  • It must not terminate near a door, a window, a roof vent, a fresh air intake, or under a skirt or box where gases can pool.
  • Exhaust pipe gets extremely hot along its whole length. It needs clearance from wiring, fuel lines, tanks, insulation and floor structure, and it needs proper support so vibration does not fatigue a joint open.
  • The combustion air intake also lives outside, and it must be sited where it cannot pull in the heater’s own exhaust.
  • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm regardless. A correct install should never trigger it. That is the reason to have one.

If you take one thing from this guide: budget for the install, not just the heater. The exhaust kit, mounting, and time are where the safety lives, and they are what the $150 headline price does not include.

Sizing: almost everyone buys too much heater

The standard mistake is buying 5kW because it costs about the same as 2kW and seems like free insurance. It is not free.

For an insulated van in the common conversion sizes, roughly 10 to 14 cubic metres, published guidance puts a 2kW unit as adequate down to about -5C outside. A 5kW unit in that same space cannot run at 5kW for long without cooking you out, so it drops to minimum output and then cycles: fire, satisfy the thermostat, shut down, cool, restart.

That cycling is the problem, and it shows up three ways. It is louder, because every restart means the fuel pump ticking back up and the fan spinning to purge. It uses more power, because restarts mean glow plug cycles. And it carbons up, because low, intermittent burns are the condition under which soot accumulates on the glow plug and heat exchanger.

There is a genuine counter-argument in the community worth reporting rather than flattening, because it is not stupid: a 5kW unit held at roughly 40% load can be quieter and more economical than a 2kW unit running flat out, since a heater working near its ceiling runs its pump and fan hard. Both claims can be true, and they resolve into one rule.

Buy the smallest heater that covers your worst realistic night, so it can run steadily at a moderate output rather than idling at minimum. The failure mode to avoid is a heater that never gets to work.

Power and fuel: cheaper to run than people expect

Neither of these usually decides the purchase, but both get asked, so here are the published figures.

Electrical draw is two numbers, not one. Startup runs the glow plug at roughly 6 to 12 amps for two to three minutes. Once the flame is established the glow plug switches off and the unit settles to about 1 to 2 amps for the fan and controller. So a heater is a modest continuous load with a spike on every ignition, which is one more reason cycling is expensive and steady running is not. Fuel is genuinely cheap. Published consumption spans about 0.10 L/h for a 2kW on low to about 0.50 L/h for a 5kW on high, with 0.2 to 0.3 L/h a commonly reported figure for an insulated van in real use, rising toward 0.5 L/h uninsulated. An overnight run is on the order of a couple of litres.

The tank decision matters more than the consumption. All-in-one units bundle their own 5L or 10L tank, which makes installation dramatically simpler and means you carry and fill a separate jerry. Tapping the vehicle’s own diesel tank is tidier and never needs filling, but it is a fuel system modification, and it is the part of a heater install most worth paying someone to do if you are not confident. Note that a vehicle tank pickup is normally installed to leave a reserve, so the heater cannot strand you by draining the tank you need to drive home.

Altitude: the spec that catches mountain travellers

As you climb, air density falls, less oxygen reaches the burner, and a heater that keeps injecting the same amount of fuel burns it incompletely. The symptoms are soot, smoke, poor output, and eventually a shutdown fault.

Reported thresholds: units without compensation commonly start struggling around 5,000 ft. Units with automatic ECU compensation claim reliable operation much higher, with quality units cited around 11,483 ft and several current budget listings claiming automatic altitude adjustment to 18,045 ft.

That last number appears on both the Vevor and HCALORY listings we looked at, which is worth flagging plainly: it is a manufacturer claim on a budget product, we have not verified it, and independently checking it is exactly the kind of thing this site exists to do. If your trips include Colorado, Utah or the Sierra, treat altitude compensation as a required feature rather than a bonus, and treat the specific ceiling as unproven.

Budget units versus Webasto and Espar

The price spread is the most extreme in any van category we cover: roughly $150 for a budget all-in-one against roughly $1,500 for a genuine Webasto or Eberspächer/Espar. You can buy ten of the former for one of the latter, and the combustion principle is the same.

Owner reports do not support a simple “you get what you pay for” story. Plenty of budget units run for years. Some premium units have problems. What the premium brands reliably buy you is the surrounding infrastructure rather than more heat:

  • Documentation and diagnostics. A fault code you can look up and a dealer network that knows the unit.
  • Parts availability and support. The counterweight is that premium parts are expensive in absolute terms, with reports of $150-plus for a burner assembly alone.
  • A manual written for the install. Given that the install is where the risk is, this is not a trivial line item.

The honest framing is that the cheapest heater is not automatically the lowest-cost heater over the life of the van. A budget unit that fails and cannot be diagnosed, repaired or matched to spares erases its own saving. A budget unit that runs for five winters is one of the best value purchases in a van build. Both outcomes are common, which is why this comes down to your tolerance for being your own support network, the same trade-off we described for budget 12V air conditioning.

What to buy

Every specification in this table is a manufacturer claim. VanTested has not bench-tested any diesel heater, and none of these numbers has been independently verified. Our only first-hand equipment data so far lives in the Vevor mini split field log. Prices move constantly in this category, so treat tiers as guidance.

The 2kW is the pick for most builds. It matches the output to the space so the heater runs steadily instead of cycling, and the 10L tank means longer between fills than the 5L units.

Take the 5kW only if your van is large, poorly insulated, or you genuinely camp below freezing. If you buy it for a medium insulated van you are buying the cycling problem described above.

  • Real heat output against the claim, which is the same credibility gap we found across budget 12V air conditioning.
  • Actual altitude ceiling on units claiming 18,045 ft.
  • Overnight watt-hours at a stated cabin and outside temperature, which is the number that actually sizes a battery bank.
  • Soot accumulation on an oversized unit run on minimum versus a correctly sized unit run at medium, over a season.

The risk lives in the install rather than the box. How much diesel does a van heater use per hour?

Published figures across the category run from about 0.10 L/h for a 2kW unit on low to about 0.50 L/h for a 5kW on high. Yes, and treat it as part of the heater purchase rather than an optional extra. A correctly installed diesel air heater keeps its combustion products entirely outside the living space, so a working alarm should never go off. That is precisely the point: the alarm exists to tell you when the thing that is supposed to be impossible has happened, which is usually an exhaust leak, a cracked heat exchanger, or exhaust gases finding their way back in through an underbody gap or an open vent. Fit one, mount it where you sleep, and test it.
