There are three ways to buy a diesel air heater for a van, and the price spread between them is the most extreme in any category we cover. On 2026-08-26 a 2kW budget all-in-one listed at $96.21 and a 2kW-class Webasto kit at $1,295. You can buy thirteen of the former for one of the latter.

The uncomfortable part, if you are hoping price sorts the decision for you, is that they burn diesel the same way. Combustion happens inside a sealed chamber whose intake and exhaust both live outside the vehicle. The air circulating through your van passes over a heat exchanger and is never mixed with exhaust gas. That architecture is what makes diesel air heaters safe when installed correctly, and it is identical at both ends of the ladder.

So the question is not which heater is better. It is what the extra $1,200 actually buys, and whether you want it.

The listings tell you what each tier thinks you should buy

Search the budget end and you are shown 5kW and 8kW units almost exclusively, at $90 to $190. Search Webasto or Espar and their mainstream van product is 2 to 2.2kW at $1,250 to $1,295.

That is the sizing argument made by the market itself. The tier with engineers and dealer networks sells a small heater. The tier competing on a marketplace sells the biggest number it can print on the box, because 8kW sounds like more heater for $96 and there is nobody in the transaction to tell you that an oversized unit will cycle you awake and soot up its own glow plug.

Buying 2kW at the budget end means deliberately ignoring what the category is pushing at you. It is the single most valuable thing you can know before you spend $96.

The channel is half the difference, and nobody mentions it

A budget heater is an e-commerce product. You add it to a cart, it arrives as a finished appliance in a box, and everything after that is yours to solve.

Webasto and Espar mostly are not. Even the Amazon listings are installation kits, and the brands primarily move through dealers and installers. That matters twice. It means part of the price gap is hardware and labour you would otherwise buy separately, so the raw $96-versus-$1,295 comparison flatters the budget tier. And it means the two tiers fail differently for reasons that have nothing to do with build quality.

When a budget unit throws a code you do not recognise, your options are a forum thread and a seller who may not answer. When a premium unit throws a code, there is a number to call. If you are the kind of person who finds the forum thread and enjoys it, you are paying for support you will not use. If you are not, you are buying a box you cannot fix.

Worth confirming with the dealer rather than assuming: ask what the warranty requires in terms of professional installation before you plan a self-install on a premium unit.

Where owner reports agree

Owner reports do not support a simple “you get what you pay for” story, and pretending otherwise would be the easy version of this page.

Plenty of budget units run for years without drama. Some premium units have problems. Both outcomes are common enough that anyone telling you the cheap ones always fail has not read enough threads.

What owners do converge on:

The documentation problem is not hypothetical

The strongest argument against the budget tier is not that the hardware is worse. It is that the instructions can be dangerous.

In June 2023 the UK’s product safety regulator recalled a Vevor WF 5001 parking heater. The defect was not the heater. It was that the instructions did not warn users to route the exhaust away from combustible and poisonous materials, so buyers were installing it wrong. A correct unit with a manual that omits the one instruction that keeps you alive is, functionally, a defective product.

The recall was about a manual, the hardware in that category is broadly the same regardless of which brand name is printed on it, and the honest lesson is not “avoid this brand.” It is do not learn your exhaust routing from any budget unit’s manual. Strip out the brand loyalty and the decision reduces to one question: for the life of this van, are you willing to be your own support network?

Buy 2kW at the budget end if you are comfortable reading install guidance from outside the box, you would rather spend the difference on exhaust hardware and a good CO detector, and a failed heater in year four means an interesting weekend rather than a ruined trip. This is a rational purchase and a common one.

Buy the Webasto or Espar if the van is your home or your income, you want a phone number when it faults at 2am in February, or you are having it professionally installed anyway, in which case the marginal cost over a budget unit is smaller than the sticker suggests. You are not overpaying. You are buying a different product that happens to make the same amount of heat.

Do not buy 5kW or 8kW in either tier unless you are heating something considerably bigger than an insulated van, no matter how good the price looks.

  • Time to a documented answer on a fault code in each tier, which is the premium tier’s entire value proposition and the one thing nobody puts a number on.
